Mullin needed to make his way back to Pesta’s keep to assure her the Harbinger had been destroyed by the angry mob. That, and he still had his own agenda to look after.

“How the fuck will I find a female Cahliany-Mur when they’ve been extinct for a millennium?” He walked and cursed under his breath at Roth’s absurd request.

He had served under Roth for as long as he could remember, and it wasn’t the first time he had been sent on a wild fucking goose chase to retrieve some impossible object. However, it was the first time that object would actually be impossible to find—like looking for a needle in a haystack, if the needle happened to also look like hay.

As far as he could remember, the Cahliany-Mur had no distinguishing characteristics except the male’s ability to turn any living creature to stone and the female’s ability to reverse it. What he’d want the female for was beyond him. At least the male could be a promising ally in battle, but it wasn’t his place to question his lord and commander.

The gates of Pesta’s keep loomed in the distance, and even from this far off, he could hear the screams of those being tortured. There was a steady flow of boats always delivering fresh meat for payment. Why send the damned to be judged when payment was much higher with Pesta?

He sauntered through the towering gates as if he owned the place. None were stupid enough to question his presence. His reputation as a ruthless killer and Roth’s top general preceded him wherever he went, as did his sexual prowess. He took what he wanted, and Pesta was no different.

A plethora of unsavory creatures gave Mullin a wide berth as he passed, scurrying out of his way, back to whatever hovel they crawled out of. The pit area was always full of unsavory activity, and today was no different. A human male was strung up to a whipping post, his back nothing more than red mush. Pesta did like her entertainment on the sadistic side—it was one of her finer qualities.

As he entered the great hall, Pesta stood tall her rage radiating off her in physical waves. The very air in the room rippled with every breath she took. . Mullin glanced around the immense room at the carnage strewn about. Every surface of the stone walls and floor was covered in slick red blood, and standing as poised and put together as ever was the deliverer of that slaughter.

Her white, low cut gown held no evidence of the carnage, a striking contrast to the blood pooled at her feet. “Where is my Harbinger!” Pesta growled, her eyes blazing and hands fisted. She pounded them against her thigh as she screamed at the top of her lungs. “What did you do with him!”

Mullin held her enraged gaze as he walked past the body parts, ignoring the massacre like the hardened battle general he was. He noticed a flinch in Pesta’s eyes as she watched him approach, his power and strength not lost, even on her.
